4 Reasons Why You Should Attend a University – Written by Lauren Smith
If you’ve ever even thought about what it would be like for you to attend a university, then I challenge you to take the leap! Being at a university teaches you responsibility, independence and lets your passions flourish all while in your small community of the college campus. Even if you don’t know exactly what you want to study (I didn’t know for a long time), a University is a great place to help you find your passions. Here are the reasons why you should attend a University.
If you attend a University where you have the option to live on campus, do so. Here’s why: This may be your first time living on your own, which means you will automatically make memories. Also, living in a dorm has many more benefits than living in an apartment. In a dorm, you are surrounded by support from your RA (aka Resident Adviser, who is there for almost any dorm concerns), your roommate(s) other students around your age, your campus’ public safety department who is always around for your security and other university staff. Besides living on your own can just be fun!
#2. Feeling Connected:
One of the reasons why I was so excited to attend a University was because I knew that there were a ton of clubs, activities and groups I could join! If sororities/fraternities are your thing, there are some for you, along with photography clubs, basketball teams, even debate teams! You are sure to find something you love, spend time with people who have similar interests and make friends.
#3. Money, Money, Money!:
Financial reasons are some of the main reasons why people do not attend college, and being at a university does cost a pretty penny. However, there are so many scholarships (academic and nonacademic) and grant money that institutions are ready to give away. You just have to take the first steps in looking for them and applying. While free money is good, there are also plenty of campus jobs you can apply for such as working at the bookstore, a Resident Adviser or even off-campus jobs to save money.
The location of the university is also very important when choosing the right university for you because it’s all about what makes you most comfortable. The location of my university was important to me because I knew that I wanted to explore a lively, urban environment.
There are many ways to become a successful person and to be able to provide for yourself. If you do choose to go the college-route, community college is an option (which means a smaller campus, smaller class sizes and local) and then the University option, which is usually bigger than a community college, with more passions and courses to give you more of “the college experience”. But you should know that the most important thing is doing what makes you feel best and most comfortable! So, I wish you luck in your adventure called life!
